The one thing we wanted to do was minimize the amount of drywall to be cut along the length of the chase ---to allow pipe to be inserted--- so, a small area was cut near the exit point above the window to allow one 30" section of pipe to be inserted at a time and glued together. Purple Mountain Radon cut six sections of pipe with each being 3" in length and glued them together until we reached the far end where the suction point was located. We also drilled a pilot hole in the area between the wall and the wall framing and discovered the footing was not an obstruction. This allowed us to core through the floor and create the void by removing soil.

In this multi-level home there is a basement level and a garden level. We cored through the floor in the basement level and through the wall of the garden level and combined the two suction points.

I wanted to thank you for the great job with installing the radon system in my house. The initial monitoring readings went from 15.8pcL to 2.1pcL in 12 hours! "

During our walkthrough to determine radon system placement, the homeowner asked if it could be installed behind a finished wall next to a closet. He said there was about a nine inch gap between the basement wall and the sill plate on the floor. Our response was that we would need to see how far the footing extends, and if it was clear, we could definitely do it.

Additionally, from this location the only way to exit the house would be to utilize a chase where HVAC ducting was installed on the basement ceiling. Fortunately, this chase happened to have several inches available for our pipe to pass through.

Low Clearance Crawlspace & Basement

The crawlspace area was approximately 900 square feet with the basement taking up about 300 square feet. Purple Mountain Radon has had success deploying the RadonWell and recommended to install a RadonWell in the crawlspace. A secondary suction point into the basement slab was also recommended to apply suction at the lowest point of the structure. The previous radon contractor installed a fan that works adequately in a crawlspace situation, but not in applying high amounts of suction force to a sub-soil or sub-slab scenario, and thus, installing a high suction fan, in this case, a Festa Eagle Extreme, was installed.

The presently installed vapor barrier was left intact and not sealed. Post-install testing resulted in bringing down the radon to 2.7 pCi/L

Purple Mountain Radon was called by a homeowner who was selling his home which was constructed in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in the year 1894. His home had a radon mitigation system installed 3 years prior, but the radon level was not successfully reduced by the contracted radon mitigator as measured by the buyer's radon test which was above 8 pCi/L.

Purple Mountain Radon inspected the home and found a low clearance crawlspace adjacent to a cellar/basement where the HVAC equipment and water heater were located. Additionally, behind the HVAC system was a wall that separated the basement into another crawlspace area that was inaccessible. The radon contractor installed a vapor barrier and sealed to the walls where he could. Due to the low clearance, inaccessible crawlspace area, and stone wall foundation, a complete seal was impossible to achieve. He did not attempt to address the basement slab.

To add to the challenging project, the next-door empty lot was excavated for a new house build the day after our install. Disturbing the soil in this way greatly increases the amount of radon that is released.

Now, let's dive into the full blog article.

Radon Progeny and Effect of Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality is one of the most important aspects of a healthy home, yet it's often overlooked. Among the various hidden threats, radon progeny pose a significant risk that many homeowners aren’t even aware of. These radioactive decay products of radon gas can infiltrate our homes silently and compromise the air we breathe—especially in enclosed spaces. In this article, we’ll explore the radon progeny and effect of indoor air quality, why it matters, and how you can protect your living environment.

Understanding Radon and Its Progeny

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms when uranium in soil, rock, and water breaks down. It's colorless, odorless, and tasteless, which makes it undetectable without proper testing equipment. However, the real concern isn’t just the radon gas itself—it’s what comes next: radon progeny.

Common Radon Progeny Isotopes

When radon decays, it creates a chain of radioactive elements known as progeny or decay products. These include:

Polonium-218

Lead-214

Bismuth-214

Polonium-214

These progeny emit alpha radiation, which can cause significant biological damage if inhaled into the lungs.

How Radon Enters Indoor Spaces

Radon primarily enters buildings from the ground beneath. Since it originates from uranium in soil and rocks, it can seep through cracks and gaps in the foundation of homes and buildings.

Building Materials and Soil Gas

Some construction materials, like concrete and brick, may contain trace amounts of uranium, which also release radon gas. Soil gas is the biggest source of radon infiltration indoors.

HVAC Systems and Ventilation Gaps

Poorly sealed foundations and improperly ventilated basements are hotspots for radon accumulation. Gaps around service pipes, sump pumps, and crawlspaces can allow radon to enter and accumulate, especially when negative pressure draws the gas indoors.

Health Impacts of Radon Progeny

While radon gas itself is not very reactive, its decay products are highly radioactive and cling to dust and other airborne particles. When inhaled, these particles can lodge in the lungs and emit alpha radiation, damaging lung tissue and leading to serious health consequences.

Mechanism of Alpha Radiation Damage

Alpha particles are heavy and energetic. Though they can’t penetrate the skin, once inside the lungs, they can directly damage DNA in cells, increasing the risk of mutations and lung cancer.

EPA Estimates and Case Studies

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. The World Health Organization also warns that radon causes tens of thousands of lung cancer deaths globally each year, with non-smokers particularly vulnerable.

Indoor Air Quality Metrics Affected by Radon

The presence of radon and its progeny alters several key indoor air quality metrics:

Radioactive particle concentration

Airborne particulate matter levels

Volatile organic compound (VOC) interactions

Radon decay products can attach to existing particulates in the air, making them more dangerous and harder to filter out.

Long-Term Exposure Effects

Chronic exposure to even low levels of radon progeny can accumulate over time, leading to increased cancer risks—particularly for children, elderly individuals, and people with compromised respiratory systems.

Radon Measurement and Detection

Testing is the only way to know if radon is present in your home. There are two primary types of radon testing:

Short-Term vs Long-Term Radon Testing

Short-term kits measure radon levels over 2 to 90 days.

Long-term kits monitor over 90 days, providing more accurate year-round averages.

Interpreting Radon Levels and Units (pCi/L)

Radon levels are typically measured in picocuries per liter (pCi/L). The EPA recommends action if radon levels exceed 4.0 pCi/L, though mitigation is advised for levels above 2.0 pCi/L in some countries.

Mitigation Techniques for Indoor Radon

Lowering radon levels in a home is entirely possible—and necessary for long-term health.

Active Soil Depressurization (ASD)

This is the most common and effective method. It involves installing a vent pipe system and fan to pull radon from beneath the house and vent it outdoors.

Improving Ventilation and Airflow

Increasing air exchange rates in basements and crawlspaces can dilute indoor radon levels. Heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) are particularly effective in colder climates.

Sealing Entry Points

While not a standalone solution, sealing cracks in floors and walls, and around service pipes, can reduce radon entry and improve the efficiency of other mitigation strategies.

Government Regulations and Public Awareness

Many countries have set national guidelines for acceptable radon levels in indoor environments. In the U.S., the EPA leads awareness campaigns, while in Europe, the EU has enacted radon action plans and building codes.

Public awareness remains low, which is why education and regular home testing are critical steps for homeowners.

Best Practices for Homeowners and Builders

Test before buying or selling a home

Include radon-resistant features in new construction

Re-test every few years or after renovations

Install a radon mitigation system if levels are high

These practices are essential for safeguarding the health of all occupants.

Role of Technology in Air Quality Management

Today’s smart home technologies include radon sensors, IoT air monitors, and automated ventilation systems that can detect dangerous levels of radon progeny and alert homeowners in real time.

Some devices even link to mobile apps, providing historical trends and actionable advice on maintaining clean indoor air.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is the difference between radon and radon progeny?

Radon is a gas, while radon progeny are solid radioactive particles formed when radon decays. These progeny are more dangerous because they stick to airborne dust and can be inhaled.

2. How can I tell if my home has radon?

You need to use a radon test kit. There’s no way to detect it through smell, sight, or taste.

3. How dangerous is radon exposure compared to smoking?

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. Smokers exposed to radon have an even higher risk.

4. Do air purifiers remove radon or its progeny?

Standard air purifiers don’t remove radon gas, but HEPA filters can reduce radon progeny attached to airborne particles.

5. Is radon only a problem in basements?

Radon concentrations are highest in basements and lower floors, but it can spread to upper floors if ventilation is poor.

6. How much does radon mitigation cost?

Mitigation typically costs between $800 and $2,500 depending on the home size and method used.

Conclusion

Radon progeny represents a silent but serious threat to indoor air quality and public health. Because it's invisible and odorless, many people are exposed without knowing it—until it's too late. But the good news? Radon problems are entirely preventable and fixable. Regular testing, smart technology, and proper mitigation strategies can help you breathe easier and live healthier.

Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, can infiltrate homes through foundation cracks, walls, and other entry points. This invisible and odorless gas poses serious health risks, including increased lung cancer rates. Conducting radon testing as part of home inspections is essential to assessing indoor air quality and safety. If you're in Colorado, Purple Mountain Radon specializes in radon mitigation to safeguard your home

How to Read Radon Test Results

Radon levels are measured in picocuries per liter of air (pCi/L). According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), radon levels of 4.0 pCi/L or higher require immediate action. It's crucial to understand the difference between short-term and long-term tests: short-term tests offer a snapshot of radon levels, while long-term tests provide a comprehensive view over time.

What Different Radon Levels Mean

Below 2.0 pCi/L: Generally considered low risk.

2.0 to 4.0 pCi/L: Some risk present; consider mitigation to further reduce radon levels.

Above 4.0 pCi/L: High risk; professional radon mitigation is strongly recommended.

Taking Action Based on Radon Test Results

If your radon test results show elevated levels, it’s important to consult a radon mitigation professional. They can assess your home and recommend effective solutions, such as installing a radon reduction system or improving ventilation. Retesting after mitigation ensures that the levels remain within a safe range.

Ensuring a Safe Home Environment

Interpreting radon test results is a vital step in protecting your home and health. By understanding what the numbers mean and taking appropriate action when necessary, you can create a healthier living environment. If you live in Colorado, Purple Mountain Radon is your go-to resource for radon testing and mitigation.

Radon is an invisible threat that many homeowners in Colorado aren’t even aware of—yet it's responsible for an estimated 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the U.S. alone. With the state’s unique geology, radon is a common concern across Colorado, making regular testing a crucial part of maintaining a healthy home.

But when it comes time to test for radon, many homeowners face a common question: should I do it myself, or hire a professional? Let’s break down the pros and cons of each option to help you make the right choice for your home and family.

Understanding Radon and Its Risks

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms from the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and groundwater. It can seep into homes through cracks in the foundation, crawlspaces, or gaps around pipes and drains. Once inside, it can build up to dangerous levels—especially in airtight homes or during colder months when windows and doors remain closed.

Long-term exposure to elevated radon levels is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, second only to smoking. Since radon is odorless, tasteless, and invisible, testing is the only way to know if your home is affected.

What Is DIY Radon Testing?

DIY radon test kits are widely available online and at home improvement stores. These kits come in two main forms:

Short-term tests (2 to 90 days): Provide a quick snapshot of radon levels.

Long-term tests (90+ days): Offer a more accurate reflection of average exposure over time.

Most kits involve placing a detector in the lowest livable area of your home, following enclosed instructions, and then mailing the sample to a lab for results.

Pros of DIY Testing:

Affordable: Most kits cost between $10 and $40.

Convenient: You can test on your own time without scheduling appointments.

Good for screening: Helpful as a first step if you’ve never tested your home before.

Cons of DIY Testing:

Room for error: Placement mistakes or failure to maintain closed-house conditions can affect results.

Lack of expert interpretation: You may not know what steps to take next if results show elevated levels.

Limited precision: DIY kits don’t provide continuous monitoring or detailed insights.

Why Choose Professional Radon Testing?

Professional radon testing is carried out by certified measurement specialists using advanced equipment—such as continuous radon monitors (CRMs)—that offer precise and real-time data. These experts follow EPA protocols to ensure accurate readings, interpret results clearly, and recommend next steps when mitigation is necessary.

Benefits of Hiring a Professional:

Reliable results: Testing is performed under strict standards.

Expert guidance: Professionals explain results and mitigation options clearly.

Peace of mind: Especially important during real estate transactions or after previous elevated readings.

More advanced tools: Equipment like CRMs provide hour-by-hour data for better decision-making.

What Does It Cost?

Professional radon testing in Colorado typically ranges between $150 and $250, depending on the size and layout of the home. While the upfront cost is higher than DIY testing, it can help you avoid costly errors—and potentially serious health risks—down the line.

Which Option Is Right for You?

Here are a few things to consider when deciding between DIY and professional testing:

Budget: DIY kits are affordable, but may require retesting if results are unclear.

Urgency: Selling or buying a home? Professional testing is often required or strongly recommended.

Accuracy needs: If you’ve never tested before or live in an area with high radon potential, start with professional testing for peace of mind.

Comfort level: Are you confident interpreting results and managing next steps on your own?

Keep Your Home and Family Protected

Whether you choose a DIY kit or hire a professional, the most important step is simply getting tested. Radon doesn’t care where you live, and here in Colorado, the risk is real. Purple Mountain Radon is here to help you understand your home’s radon levels and take action when needed.

Radon. It's a word that might not be on your daily radar, but it should be. This silent, invisible gas poses a significant health risk, and understanding it is crucial for every homeowner. Today, we're diving into the top 10 questions homeowners ask about radon, arming you with the knowledge to safeguard your family.

The Invisible Enemy: What You Need to Know

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas, born from the decay of uranium in soil, rock, and water. It's odorless, colorless, and tasteless, making it a stealthy intruder in our homes. According to the EPA, this unseen threat is a leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Scary, right? Let's break down the most common questions to demystify radon.

1. What is Radon?

As mentioned, radon is a radioactive gas that forms naturally. It's everywhere, but the levels within your home are what matter.

2. How Does Radon Enter a Home?

Think of your home's foundation as a sieve. Radon seeps through cracks, construction joints, gaps around pipes, and even through well water. Poor ventilation and high radon levels in your area exacerbate the risk.

3. How Do I Test for Radon?

Easy! You can purchase a DIY radon test kit or hire a professional. The EPA's guide to radon testing is a fantastic resource.

4. What is Considered a High Radon Level?

The EPA recommends action if levels exceed 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter of air). Even levels between 2-4 pCi/L are worth considering for mitigation.

5. What Are the Risks of High Radon Levels?

Lung cancer. The EPA estimates about 21,000 lung cancer deaths annually in the U.S. are linked to radon. Smokers face an even higher risk.

6. How Can I Mitigate Radon in My Home?

Professional radon mitigation systems, often involving venting radon from beneath the house, are highly effective. Check out the National Radon Program Services for more info.

7. What Are the Symptoms of Radon Exposure?

There are no immediate symptoms. The risk is long-term, increasing the likelihood of lung cancer over time. Regular testing is your best defense.

8. Can New Homes Be Built Radon-Resistant?

Absolutely! Modern construction can include features like vent pipes and plastic sheeting. The EPA's guide on radon-resistant construction is invaluable.

9. Is Radon a Problem Everywhere?

Radon levels vary, but no area is completely safe. Check your state's radon map via the EPA’s State Radon Contact Directory.

10. What Should I Do if My Home Has High Radon Levels?

Contact a certified radon mitigation professional immediately. The National Radon Proficiency Program can help you find qualified contractors.

Protecting Your Home and Family

Radon is a serious concern, but you can take control. Regular testing, mitigation, and staying informed are key. Don't let this invisible threat linger. Take action to ensure your home is a safe haven.

Stay informed and proactive!

Radon is an invisible, odorless radioactive gas that poses significant health risks, including lung cancer. In Colorado, radon is a prevalent concern due to the state's geological characteristics, leading to elevated levels in many homes. Understanding these risks and taking proactive measures are essential for safeguarding your home and family.

Radon Levels in Colorado

Approximately half of all homes in Colorado have high radon levels. The state's average indoor radon concentration is 6.4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L), exceeding the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) action level of 4.0 pCi/L. To put this into perspective, living in a home with Colorado's average radon level is comparable to undergoing 200 chest X-rays per year. Alarmingly, about 500 Coloradans die each year from lung cancer caused by radon exposure.

Factors Contributing to High Radon Levels

Radon levels are influenced by soil composition, climate, and construction practices. The EPA’s Map of Radon Zones categorizes areas into three risk zones:

Zone 1 (High Potential): Predicted indoor levels above 4.0 pCi/L.

Zone 2 (Moderate Potential): Levels between 2–4 pCi/L.

Zone 3 (Low Potential): Levels below 2 pCi/L.

Many areas in Colorado fall into Zone 1 and Zone 2, indicating a significant risk of elevated radon exposure in homes.

Health Risks of Radon Exposure

Long-term radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Smokers exposed to radon face an even higher risk. Since radon is undetectable without testing, regular assessments are crucial to identifying its presence and mitigating health risks.

Testing for Radon in Your Colorado Home

DIY Radon Testing Kits

Homeowners can purchase affordable radon test kits online or from local hardware stores. To ensure accurate results:

Place the kit in the lowest lived-in level of your home.

Keep windows and doors closed as much as possible during the test.

Avoid testing during extreme weather conditions.

For more guidance, consult the EPA’s Radon Testing Guide.

Professional Testing Services

For accurate radon detection, it is best to consult certified professionals. Purple Mountain Radon provides expert radon testing services across Colorado, utilizing advanced methods to ensure precise results. Homeowners can schedule a professional test with Purple Mountain Radon by visiting www.purplemountainradon.com. Additionally, Colorado residents can find licensed radon testers through the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment.

Effective Radon Mitigation Strategies

Long-Term Mitigation Solutions

For homes with high radon levels, installing a radon mitigation system is the most effective solution. Active soil depressurization (ASD) is the preferred method, using a vent system and fan to direct radon safely outside before it enters the home.

Temporary Fixes

While not as reliable as professional mitigation, sealing foundation cracks and improving ventilation can temporarily reduce radon levels.

Hiring Professionals

Professional installation ensures the system is tailored to your home's structure. Colorado offers a Low-Income Radon Mitigation Assistance (LIRMA) program, which can cover mitigation costs for eligible households. For more information, visit www.coloradoradon.info.

Colorado’s Commitment to Radon Awareness

Colorado actively promotes radon awareness through local health initiatives and educational programs. The Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment offers resources, including:

Free or discounted radon test kits for qualifying households.

Public workshops on radon risks and mitigation.

Assistance programs for homeowners seeking financial support for mitigation.

Tips for Staying Safe in High-Radon Areas

Test your home annually, especially during colder months when windows are closed.

Monitor frequently used areas such as basements and bedrooms.

Educate yourself through government resources like the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment’s Radon Program.

Participate in community events that promote radon education and testing.

Protect Your Home and Family Today

Radon poses a serious health risk, but with proper testing and mitigation, you can significantly reduce exposure. Colorado’s geology makes radon a widespread issue, but homeowners can take action by testing their homes and consulting certified radon professionals.

Don’t wait—test your home for radon today and take the necessary steps to ensure long-term safety for your family.

January is National Radon Action Month, a time to raise awareness about the invisible, odorless gas that could be affecting your Colorado home—radon. As one of the leading causes of lung cancer among non-smokers, it’s critical to take steps now to safeguard your family. With colder weather in Colorado, homes are often sealed tight, making it the perfect time to test for radon. Here’s how you can act this month to ensure your home is a safer place to live.

Understanding Radon: The Unseen Danger in Your Home

Radon forms naturally when uranium in soil, rock, and water breaks down. This radioactive gas enters homes through cracks in foundations, gaps around pipes, or other openings. It’s a leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, making awareness essential—especially during Radon Action Month.

Understanding Radon: The Unseen Danger in Your Home

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms when uranium breaks down in soil, rock, and water. In Colorado, where the geology can make homes more susceptible, radon can enter through cracks in your foundation, gaps around pipes, or other openings. This colorless, odorless gas poses serious health risks, especially for families who may be unaware of its presence.

Identifying Radon Levels in Your Home

How to Test for Radon: DIY vs. Professional Testing

The first step is testing your home for radon. In Colorado, testing during winter is particularly important, as homes are often closed off, which can lead to elevated radon levels. You can choose from affordable DIY kits or opt for professional testing to get a more accurate reading. Place your radon test kit in the lowest level of your home—typically the basement or crawl space—where radon levels are often highest.

Interpreting Test Results and Safe Levels

Once you’ve tested, compare the results with the EPA’s guidelines. If your radon levels exceed 4.0 pCi/L, it’s time to take action. Radon Action Month is an ideal time to address this issue and make your home safer.

Effective Strategies to Minimize Radon Exposure

Implementing Radon Mitigation Systems

Radon mitigation is a proactive way to reduce radon exposure. In Colorado, systems like sub-slab depressurization work by venting radon gas from beneath the house and directing it outside. While the cost of these systems can vary depending on your home’s size and design, they are a long-term investment in your health. National Radon Action Month serves as an excellent opportunity to explore this option.

Home Improvement Techniques to Reduce Radon Levels

Sealing cracks in your foundation and improving ventilation are simple yet effective ways to lower radon levels. In areas like Colorado, where homes may be prone to radon, these improvements can significantly reduce exposure, particularly in basements or crawl spaces.

Planning for New Construction: Building Radon-Resistant Homes

Building a new home? This is the ideal time to implement radon-resistant construction methods. In Colorado, homes built with features like gas-permeable layers, plastic sheeting, and sealed sump pits can prevent radon infiltration from the start. Be sure to discuss these options with your builder during National Radon Action Month to keep your new home safe from radon from the ground up.

Addressing Common Misconceptions About Radon

Myths vs. Facts

A common misconception is that radon is only a concern in older homes. In reality, radon can affect homes of any age, size, or location, including those in Colorado, where the natural geological conditions can increase the likelihood of radon infiltration. Another myth is that radon levels remain the same over time. In fact, radon levels can fluctuate, so regular testing is important.

The Role of Smoking and Radon Exposure

Radon exposure increases the risk of lung cancer, and the danger is even greater for smokers. However, non-smokers are still at significant risk. This highlights the importance of reducing radon exposure through mitigation, especially for families in Colorado, where high radon levels are not uncommon.

January is National Radon Action Month—a time to raise awareness about radon and how it impacts homes and health. If you’re planning to sell your home, addressing radon concerns now can improve safety and increase your property’s appeal. Here’s why radon mitigation should be on your radar.

Understanding Radon: The Invisible Risk

Radon is a naturally occurring gas that enters homes through cracks in foundations, construction joints, and water supplies. It’s odorless and invisible, making it easy to overlook. However, long-term exposure to high radon levels is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., making mitigation essential for a healthy living environment.

Why Radon Testing Should Be a Priority

Testing your home for radon is a simple yet impactful step. Whether you’re a homeowner or preparing to sell, knowing your home’s radon levels allows you to take proactive measures. A radon test can also build buyer confidence by showcasing transparency and care.

The Value of Radon Mitigation Systems

Radon mitigation systems are effective solutions that reduce radon levels in homes. Using vent pipes and fans, these systems redirect radon gas safely outdoors. They are cost-efficient, discreet, and a long-term safeguard for indoor air quality—a feature that resonates strongly with buyers.

Enhancing Marketability Through Mitigation

Installing a radon mitigation system adds tangible value to your property. Buyers often see it as an investment in safety and are more likely to choose homes with existing systems over those without. Highlighting mitigation efforts in your listing can make your home stand out in a competitive market.

Make Radon Action Part of Your Home’s Story

This National Radon Action Month, take the opportunity to prioritize safety and marketability. Test your home, install a mitigation system if necessary, and share your efforts with potential buyers. It’s a simple way to turn a silent hazard into a compelling selling point while promoting a healthier living environment for all.

Radon gas is a silent threat that significantly contributes to lung cancer cases each year. As we observe Radon Action Month, it's crucial to understand how this invisible gas affects health and the steps you can take to protect your loved ones.

Causes of Lung Cancer

Smoking remains the leading cause of lung cancer, responsible for nearly 9 out of 10 cases. Exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk by 20–30%. Other contributors include radon gas exposure, air pollution, and genetic factors, affecting both smokers and non-smokers. The fact that many non-smokers develop lung cancer underscores the importance of addressing preventable risks like radon exposure for everyone.

Radon: The Second Leading Cause of Lung Cancer

Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., causing approximately 21,000 deaths annually. This odorless, tasteless gas is released from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It can seep into homes and buildings, and prolonged exposure to high levels increases the risk of lung cancer. Testing is the only way to detect radon in your home, making it an essential step for every homeowner.

Colorado's Radon and Cancer Statistics

Average Indoor Radon Level in Colorado: 6.3 pCi/L, compared to the national average of 1.3 pCi/L.

Colorado State University Extension

Homes with High Radon Levels: Approximately 50% of homes in Colorado have radon levels exceeding the EPA's action level of 4 pCi/L.

Colorado Geological Survey

Health Impact: Living in a home with Colorado's average radon level (6.4 pCi/L) is comparable to undergoing 200 chest X-rays annually.

Environmental Protection Agency

How Radon Enters Homes

Radon can infiltrate your home through:

Cracks and gaps in the foundation

Construction joints

Openings around service pipes

Wall cavities

Water supply

Protecting Your Home from Radon

Testing your home for radon is simple and cost-effective. If your test results show levels of 4 pCi/L or higher, installing a radon mitigation system can significantly reduce the gas concentration. In Colorado, the average indoor radon level is estimated to be about 6.3 pCi/L, which is higher than the national average.

Colorado State University Extension

This invisible, odorless gas can become more concentrated in homes during winter, posing increased health risks. Understanding the connection between cold weather and radon is essential for protecting your family and ensuring safe indoor air quality.

Why Radon Levels Spike in Cold Weather

During winter, homes are often sealed tightly to retain heat, reducing ventilation. This creates a pressure imbalance known as the stack effect, where warm air escapes from the upper parts of the house, drawing radon-rich air from the soil into the living spaces. Additionally, colder outdoor temperatures create a greater pressure differential between your home and the ground, further increasing radon infiltration. For more information on how radon enters homes, visit the EPA's Radon Overview

The Health Risks of Elevated Radon Levels

Prolonged exposure to high radon levels can significantly increase the risk of lung cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and the leading cause among non-smokers. Winter months, with their heightened radon concentrations, make regular testing more crucial than ever.

When to Test for Radon

Winter is the ideal season for radon testing since the conditions that lead to increased radon levels—sealed homes and reduced airflow—are most pronounced. Testing provides peace of mind and helps you take action if levels are above the EPA’s recommended threshold of 4 pCi/L.

Radon, a radioactive gas that is invisible and odorless, is a serious health risk in Colorado Springs and its surrounding areas. With geological conditions contributing to elevated radon levels, many homes in the region exceed the EPA’s action level of 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). Testing is crucial for homeowners and renters in the area, as radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Learn more about the risks specific to Colorado Springs at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE).

Why Radon Awareness is Critical in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs lies within a high-risk radon zone due to its uranium-rich soil and mountainous geography. Testing is essential, as radon levels can vary dramatically even within the same neighborhood. According to data from El Paso County Public Health, a significant number of homes in the area have unsafe radon levels. These elevated levels make testing and mitigation a vital step in creating a safe living environment.

Today we look at the second part of our deep-dive series into radon in the state of Colorado.

Sources of Radon

Radon in Colorado: A Widespread Issue

Geology and soil composition contribute to high radon levels in Colorado through the following mechanisms:

A. Uranium-rich bedrock: Colorado has abundant uranium deposits in its geological formations, such as granite, shale, and sandstone. Uranium naturally decays into radon gas, which can be released into the soil and infiltrate buildings.

B. Permeable soils: Some areas in Colorado have soils that are permeable, meaning they allow for the easy movement of gasses like radon. These soils often have high porosity and can act as conduits for radon gas to enter buildings through cracks and openings in foundations.

C. Fractures and fissures: Colorado's geology is characterized by numerous fractures and fissures in its bedrock. These geological features provide pathways for radon gas to move from the underlying soil and bedrock into buildings.

D. Building construction: The geology and soil composition can influence the construction of buildings. In areas with high radon levels, it is crucial to have proper ventilation systems and construction techniques that prevent radon gas from entering buildings.

- Some of the notable high radon regions in Colorado include:

A. Front Range: This region includes Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, and Fort Collins. Radon levels tend to be higher in this area due to the presence of granite formations.

B. Rocky Mountains: Areas along the Rocky Mountain range, especially in the central and northern parts of the state, have increased radon levels. Counties like Larimer, Weld, Grand, and Clear Creek typically exhibit higher radon concentrations.

C. Western Slope: Counties on the Western Slope, such as Mesa, Delta, Montrose, and Gunnison, have shown higher radon levels. Keep in mind that radon can be present anywhere, and it's crucial to test your home regardless of its location. Radon levels can vary even within neighborhoods, so it is recommended to conduct a radon test to determine the levels in your specific area.

- Why Colorado residents should be particularly vigilant about radon testing

While radon can be found throughout Colorado, some areas have higher levels than others and it is important to note that radon levels can vary within these counties. In fact, radon levels can vary even within communities. So while your neighbor may have tested low for radon does not necessarily mean your home will test low as well. The only way to determine the radon level in a specific home or property is to conduct a radon test.

Next time we will explore further into radon testing.

Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas that poses a serious health risk. It is a naturally occurring gas that is formed from the decay of uranium in soil and rocks that is released into the air and can easily seep into buildings, especially through cracks in the foundation or gaps in construction materials. Due to its invisibility and lack of warning signs, radon is often referred to as the silent threat.

Exposure to radon is a significant concern as it is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and is responsible for approximately 21,000 deaths each year according to the EPA. When radon is inhaled (inhalation of radon gas & radon progeny will be explained in a later blog post), it can damage the cells within the lungs, increasing the risk of cancer development. The danger lies in the fact that radon can accumulate in indoor spaces, particularly in poorly ventilated areas such as basements and crawl spaces.

It is crucial for homeowners and renters to test for radon levels in homes and workplaces to ensure early detection and take necessary steps to mitigate its presence. Installing radon mitigation systems and improving ventilation can help reduce radon levels and minimize the risk to individual's health. Next time, we'll discuss the impact of radon in our state of Colorado.
